Sakura

Cherry blossom season came and went fast here in Shizuoka, we got out to the Tenryu river just in time to catch some sakura. They only last for a short time, if you hurry you can still catch them up in the mountains.

3.11 Charity Cup

Nori-san and the whole crew in Irago had a charity surf contest last Sunday on anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake.

After a late night Nabe party we were up before the sunrise to get started.

The weather is still chilly but the waves at Sekihi were fun all morning.

After finishing up all the heats and doing a beach clean, everyone gathered on the beach at 2:46 and joined the rest of Japan to observe a few minutes of silence and prayer in honor of the victims of the quake and tsunami. It was a pretty emotional few minutes as everyone faced northeast and you could hear the sirens wailing to mark the anniversary.

By the end of the day everyone was in good spirits and we rocked out with a campfire and guitars beach blanket bingo style. Here MC BO and Yosuke get into the groove.

Maisaka

I had the evening free to walk around and take some photos the other day, I was down near the beach in Maisaka where lake Hamanako empties into the sea. Even though it was about 0 degrees C outside, it felt great just to be outside wandering around with a camera and tripod again.

Underneath the Highway 1 Bypass bridge.

And on the beach

Dane at SS

Dane Reynolds paddled out at secret spot over the holidays and proceeded to go bananas on some fun looking rights.

I had my camera but left my good lenses in Japan, so I dug an old zoom lens with broken autofocus out of the beach house closet and tried to make the best of it.

The peanut gallery was in full effect, running down the trail to get front row seats with beers in hand.
